As part of our continued effort to promote safety on the job site, Centennial will be holding its 2nd Mid-Atlantic Safety Fair, on Thursday, September 18th at La Fontaine Bleu in Lanham, MD. With over 200 attendees at our first event, we are anticipating a strong turn-out as well, this year. This free event is open to all client representatives and sub-contractors working with Centennial. This years Keynote speaker is Commissioner J. Ronald DeJuliis from the Maryland Department of Labor, Licensing & Regulation, Division of Labor & Industry. Break out topics include: Electrical Safety, Arc Flash – Square D, Crane , Scaffold and Excavation Safety, Fall Protection, Powder Actuated Tools, and for the first time Mold Awareness and Safety. After a complimentary lunch, attendees can visit several outside demonstrations that include, electrical safety, provided by BGE and proper use and set up of cranes and scaffolding. All attendees will receive certificates for each Safety Training Session attended as well as the opportunity to win fabulous door prizes. On-site registration begins at 7:15 with sessions commencing at 8:00 and the outside demonstrations concluding by 2:30. The Virginia Chapter of the Associated Builders and Contractors, Inc awarded Centennial Contractors Enterprises with its annual Paragon Award of Safety Excellence. This award recognizes the companies with the best safety practices across the state. Centennial has received the award six times since 1999. Centennial employees nationwide have had no time lost accidents for over six years, a remarkable statistic in light of the inherent danger of construction. Centennial’s company mentality makes safety more than just corporate policy, but a way of life. “Key to this successful safety culture is a focus on the important factors of training, awareness and behavior,” says Tony Lombardi, corporate safety director at Centennial. “We train our employees as well as the subcontractors on our sites on a regular basis to keep safety top of mind.” Centennial’s Safety Mission Statement reads: Safety is the single most import thing we do. Safety is more important than profit, quality, schedule or customer satisfaction. If we can not perform work safely, we will not do it. Safe is the only way we do business. “When people think of construction safety, they should think of and look to Centennial,” says John Martin, senior vice president at Centennial.

Diane Morgan, office manager for McGrath Contractor’s Washington Navy Yard location, recently took it upon herself to organize a food drive for the Capital Area Food Bank, which provides food to needy residence in the District of Columbia, Montgomery and Prince George’s County and Northern Virginia. Reaching out to fellow employees, Morgan garnered support for her efforts from McGrath and Centennial job sites at Andrews Air Force Base, Fairfax County, Prince George’s County Public Schools, Loudoun County Public Schools, the City of Alexandria/Arlington County, DCHA/AOC, the Design Build Team and the Corporate office. In total, 500 lbs of food was collected. Mike Gillespie, Director of Food Resources with the Capital Area Food Bank said this would equate to 800 meals being distributed. Gillespie further exclaimed, “Awesome, this is how it is done, if anybody asks, tell them McGrath and Centennial rock”. Asked why she decided to pursue this endeavor, Morgan stated, “I was watching television one evening and saw a report saying there was a shortage of food at the food bank and new I had to get involved. I’ve always done this. I’ve been in similar situations and know that charity starts at home. This is the first company I’ve worked for that has allowed me to participate in outreach programs”. In responding to whether this was a one time event, Morgan emphatically said ‘No way. I plan to do the same thing again next year. I would like to designate the month of May as .'The Annual Centennial & Joint Ventures Food for Thought Month”'.

Over the past two-three years Centennial Contractors has been a part of Flagstaff USD serving us in the capacity of Job Order Contracting. I would like to take a minute of your time to commend the crew working under the direction [of Centennial] leadership. Professionalism and service to the owner is the standard this crew lives by. They always go the extra mile to assure the job is done right, done on time, and punch list free. Never have I worked with people such as these. And, I have been around a long time. A little over two years ago Flagstaff USD decided to install an artificial field at one of our Elementary schools and I selected Centennial Contractors to run the show. Believe me they did just that. The team took ownership, did what they had to do and kept a close look out for our interests. They brought the project in on time, punch list free. The field is beautiful.
