Centennial Contractors Enterprises Builds First Recycled Plastic Railroad Bridges
Green materials will keep 334,000 pounds of material out of landfills while vastly improving the bridges’ capabilities.
HAMPTON ROADS, VA—February 5, 2010—Centennial Contractors Enterprises’ Fort Eustis office began work on the first of two bridges to be constructed out of recycled plastic for the United States Army.
The Army will use the new state-of-the-art bridges to train soldiers on running trains. They are expected to be completed this spring and will replace wood bridges built in 1952.
Using recycled plastic will keep 334,000 pounds of material out of landfills, and save more than 50,000 gallons of gasoline and 496 metric tons of greenhouse gases. In addition, the plastic increases the bridges’ longevity and significantly decreases the maintenance.
Centennial provides renovation and rehabilitation support for the Army at Fort Eustis through a Job Order Contract (JOC). The JOC allows Centennial to become an extension of the Fort’s engineering services team and develop a long term relationship with the team.
It was through this relationship that Centennial was able to convince Army officials that plastic was the best material for this project.
“The perception is that using green materials involves a high cost, so I bid the project using traditional materials and green materials and the green materials were more cost effective long term,” explain Bart Deforest, project manager at Centennial.
The new bridges will support a 130-ton locomotive and be made to E60 weight and speed limit standards, far surpassing the old bridges’ E19 and E25 ratings.
