NASA's Building Earns Gold

Centennial Contractors Enterprises helps NASA achieve LEED Gold certification at Johnson Space Center.

HOUSTON, TX—April 27, 2010—Not only does NASA advance our goals in space, but it works to improve our impact here on Earth. In Building 265 at Johnson Space Center, Centennial Contractors Enterprises completed an addition that has earned LEED® Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.

The project, originally set to achieve LEED Silver certification, included sustainable practices during construction and used materials that improve water efficiency, energy efficiency and indoor air quality. Centennial went above and beyond the Silver goal to meet the requirements for earning Gold certification by managing construction site waste to recycle as much of the waste as possible and using materials made with recycled content, environmentally safe paint and much more.

While building NASA Johnson Space Center’s third LEED certified building, Centennial faced a few unexpected challenges. It was just “dried in” when Hurricane Ike hit, causing severe damage to the project site. The building envelope was compromised, exterior finishes were damaged and materials stored on site were compromised. Given the importance of indoor air quality, all compromised material was torn out and removed from the site.

“Earning LEED Gold on this project shows how committed Centennial is to sustainability,” says Ken Eshelman, regional operations manager at Centennial. “It’s more than just talk for us; it’s a daily habit that we are living.”

In addition to safety, sustainability is Centennial’s top initiative. Currently over 10% of its work force are LEED Accredited Professionals. It has worked on numerous sustainable construction projects around the county including the Ft. Bragg Courthouse, Lake Washington School District and Ft. Lewis.
